Even the slower days on this trip can be pretty
amazing. Sometimes it’s just the little
things that make each day special – a short drive, clean sheets, and s’mores
around the campfire. Yesterday was one
of those days. We pulled into our
campsite just outside of Mt. Rainier National Park at lunchtime and quickly
made tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches to go with the magnificently
cooler weather. Then, it was time to get
to work. After two weeks on the road, it
was time to perform the cleaning duties that apply even when your house is rolling
instead of stationary… washing sheets and towels, dusting, and even cleaning
the bathroom.
We all pitched in to make things go as quickly as possible –
kids on cleaning duty inside (with Matt’s supervision) and me on laundry detail
– but unfortunately the one washing machine at the campground turned out to be
broken…halfway through the cycle. So, we
loaded everything up and headed to town to the laundromat. Matt dropped me and took the kids into the
park to gather information and pick up Junior Ranger supplies. By the time I was done with the laundry and
had written a blog post, they were back.
Voila! Mission accomplished. We were then able to enjoy an evening around
the campsite, under the glorious, old moss-covered evergreen trees. The kids pulled out their hammocks and found
places to hang them while Matt and I relaxed in our zero-gravity chairs. Before we knew it, the campfire glowed in the
dim twilight and it was time to head inside to rest up for our next day’s
adventures.
