We’ve started losing the hours we gained on our way west
back – one as we crossed from Pacific into Mountain Time as we crossed the
border into Montana. It felt somehow
significant… like our adventures are beginning to wind to a close. I think it made our second longer travel day
in a row a bit more challenging. We were
all feeling the impact of the longer days of sunlight and many activities we
had managed to squeeze into each one – and we were tired.
Driving around Flathead Lake on our way into West Glacier
and Fish Creek Campground, there was little chatter. We were all looking forward to arriving at
our destination and a bit of rest. After
getting set up at the campsite, the kids went out immediately to explore the
campground and how to get their feet wet in Lake McDonald. It didn’t take long before they reported back
on the 2-way radios that they had located the perfect spot for sitting in camp
chairs with our feet in the water, and they were coming back to get their suits
on.
Once we followed them back to the designated spot, I knew
the smooth colored rocks making their way down to the cold glacier melt was
just what I needed to cool my heels a bit.
I slipped off my shoes and felt the heat of the day released into the
lake surrounded by rocky mountain peaks.
Although the water was pretty chilly for swimming, the kids splashed
around a bit and tried their hand at skipping rocks while we watched from our
camp chairs. Ahhh…. We had arrived at Glacier National Park. Now if only I could muster up the energy to
explore this natural wonderland. That
chair was oh, so comfortable…
